MCR BME Officer
Yasmin Dualeh

Hi! I am Yasmin and I am first year History PhD student. I am the MCR representative for students who self-define as Black and Minority Ethnic (BME). This includes (but is not limited to) students of African, Afro-Caribbean, Middle Eastern, South Asian and East Asian heritages. As this is a new role, there is no clearly defined set of duties for the position.

My aim is to foster a more inclusive environment by amplifying the voices of BME students and by ensuring that we have a more visible role in the life of the college. Here is an indication of some of the things I intend to do as part of my role:

  • I will be launching a BME Coffee Hour — a supportive space for our diverse BME community to meet and share our experiences.

  • I will also plan social events such as film nights, performances, and other fun events open to all members of the college.

  • If there is enough interest, I will also be setting up a monthly drop-in session where students can discuss experiences of overt and institutionalised racism, microaggressions and other incidents in a confidential and safe environment.

I am very keen to hear from my fellow BME students. If you have any ideas, questions, or issues-please do not hesitate to contact me at sidneymcr-bme@srcf.ucam.org.
